Why is freezing cut comb/Ross rounds standard practice?

I’m about to harvest my Ross Rounds for the first time this week-end. The guides I’ve looked at say a freeze should be done to kill larva.

Does anyone know if this is necessary? Is it standard practice? Does it change the taste? Why is this not necessary for normal honey harvest?

Asking because I know a freeze/thaw of stuff containing water creates ice crystal formation that can shred and change proteins.
