When to Clear Top Feeder in new package?

I installed my new packages yesterday, but annoyingly my top feeders are drowning bees.

I wanna open it and put a sock on the opening (a trick I have seen works on YouTube) but I worry about both disturbing the hive and trapping a bunch of bees in the feeder shim.

Should I wait until I check the queen? Should I smoke the feeder entrance?

The weather outside is windy and I don’t want them starving, but I also don’t wanna pester them.

Any advice? I sorta wonder if a pile of dead bees isn’t a morbid way to help them get syrup without drowning for a day or two?
