Think my hive is dead, but not sure, would love advice.
Hello! This is my first year keeping bees and I'm potentially being too alarmist about over-wintering them. I have a sinking feeling the hive is dead. We've had cold weather over the last few weeks, so I didn't expect to see them, but I've pressed my ear to the hive and can't hear any noise on any sides. Today while I was observing the hive, I saw two yellow jackets fly into the opening and stay for a while. I used both a probe thermometer and a laser thermometer and saw no real temperature change, only .5 degrees F.
My admittedly rash inclination is to do a very very quick inspection today while we have fairly decent weather, 48F, but I know winter inspections are a pretty big no no.
Any advice here? Should I just leave them and wonder until spring? Thanks in advance!
