The bee’s knee(d)s

What do bees need in a hive? What requirements do they have that a hive has to fulfill?

As I undrerstand it, a hive needs to be well insulated, be between 10 and 100 litres in volume but ideally 40, and should have removable frames for inspection and honey collection. I believe that there should be at least 2 compartments, one to keep the queen and all the horrible stuff, and one for your lovely lovely honeycomb.

Essentially, I'm trying to understand what properties a beehive needs to have and I'd appreciate any advice.
