Queen excluder advice. bees not going through

Hi all. Just adding my supers this year and decided to use queen excluders. I've tried before but they wouldn't go through but I just put that down to the non drawn frames I used so this year i put some drawn frames above. However I've just had a look in one that's been on for about 4 days and there was only a handful of bees in it. Think I'll give it a week and remove them at this rate. Does anyone actually have any luck using them? Another 3 beeks I've asked told me to not use them. I just wanted to be able to find the Queen quicker when we get into swarm season ( next few weeks). Any advice would be appreciated.
