Putting a Langstroth frame in a Layens hive

So I was trying to split my very successful Langstroth hive into a new Layens that I'd just built. Only, of course, it doesn't fit in there in any orientation except completely across the Layens frames. I tried to break the frame apart and just put the comb and foundation inside a Layens frame, but I couldn't make any progress without chasing off all the nurse bees. Eventually I just chucked it in there and decided to sort it all out next year. What else could I have done?
