Planning first hives in Spring 2022. Question about placement and reducers.
I am in zone 7b. I will be having two hives in my backyard. I have a 3 acre lot so plenty of room. neighbors and neighborhood association have given the green light for the bees so no issue.
My back yard has some significant trees, some quite large. there is a creek on the lot with running water about 9 months of the years. however….overall it’s very shady with filtered sun. I have zeroed in on a specific part that allows the most sunlight. it gets good sunlight for about 5 hours and then filtered sunlight for another 2-3 hours. i am planning to cut down more trees in this area to try and increase sunlight as much as i can, however i know it won’t be perfect. anything to expect or to guard against with an area that won’t get as much direct sunlight as would be optimal?
i’m learning as much as i can over the fall and winter. when it comes to reducers, when is it best to use them? certain parts of the year? from day one? i have had a tool called the “guardian” which attaches to the reducer to limit and possibly even prevent small hive beetles from entering the hives recommended highly to me. any experience with these?
thanks so much.
