Newbie Hive Report – One Week After Package Installation: Eggs, Pollen, and Rogue Comb
Hi all,
My grandfather had bees as I was growing up, and now that I'm a functioning adult I have my first hive. I've joined a local beekeping chapter (any Wake County/Raleigh folks out there) and I'm ready to start attending meetings.
I did a one-week check-in after package installation on 3/30 and things are looking great.
- Two frames partially drawn
- Obvservable eggs, pollen, and stored sugar water/hopefully nectar
- Found queen!
I had two frames removed from where the queen cage was and noticed that in that two-frame void, they drew fresh comb from the inner cover (see photos below). It looked to be stored with the sugar water. For now, I shook all the bees back down into the frames and placed the inner cover back on and placed the "rogue comb" on top of the inner cover (I have a deep super ontop of the inner cover to allow for my sugar water feeder).
Was that the right step? The logic was to let them extract the sugar water/nectar from the rogue comb and then toss it, but I wasn't 100% on what to do?
Thanks, everyone!
