New colony

I’m new to the hobby of beekeeping so please don’t mock if this is a dumb question. I started a colony last year and due to the crazy winter jumping between 20’s and 70’s combined with my colony having a slow start/low production last year my colony died out I believe sometime in early February. Now I have more coming to try again but I wanted to know how much I have to do with the old frames. I know I have to get rid of the dead bees but do I need to clear out all the old comb and wax, or can I leave it to give them a head start this year?
