MD_Beekeeper Tip – UNEXTRACTED FRAMES OF HONEY – WHAT TO DO WITH THEM
PARTIAL or UNEXTRACTED FRAMES OF HONEY – WHAT TO DO WITH THEM
Quite often at the end of the nectar flow, I would have several partially capped frames of honey. I was told to put all these frames in a super and to put this super on the "bottom" of a hive that was lightweight on honey going into fall. To my surprise, the bees removed all of the honey from the lower box and moved it to the empty cells in the top of the hive. All of the comb in the bottom box was dry and ready to use next season. I did put this dry & empty comb in the freezer for a few days to kill any wax moth or small hive beetle larva before storing the frames for the winter. Also worked with full frames of honey I did not want to extract since I only keep about 100 lbs of honey a year for gifts & myself.
