I’m running out of space…. but it’s a little bit more complicated than that ( I think).
Currently, I have two deep 10-frame brood boxes. One of the boxes has an inline feeder (19 total frames, 38 total sides). Of the 38 total sides, 29 of them are mostly full (I define this as "on a glance, there is more comb drawn than not). About 2 weeks ago, I put 4 Apivar strips in to maintain the mite levels in the hive. I expect the strips to stay in for at least another month.
I'm worried because I am running out of space, but I can't put a honey super on until 2 weeks after the Apivar is removed from the boxes. I only own 1 other deep hive box that I was planning to use as a super.
I spoke with some local beekeepers and they say I really only need 1 to 2 deep brood boxes for the hive to survive the winter here.
Should I add the 3rd box as another deep brood box? Should I pull frames out and put empty frames in? My main concern is that in a month or two my bees will swarm without additional space. if I take out the Apivar strips, I'm afraid too many mites will show up before the winter.
What ideas does the group have?
Thank you, all!
