Hypothetical – Adding super in the fall

I was chatting with a friend of mine the other day about stuff and the question arose “You’ve only got one brood chamber going into fall (say for a new colony), but the girls have finally filled up the frames just as fall (we’re in NC where it’s in the upper 70’s during the day, maybe in the 50’s at night) hits, what’s the wisdom of adding a super to give them room to avoid swarming or ending up honey bound?” On the one hand, yeah, you’re giving them room, but in the other, what’re the chances you’re just stretching their (natural) resources? Would it make a difference if you’re feeding 2:1 and patties? Tried to find something in the books, but most are tied to established colonies. Thanks.
