How to rebuild a hive?
Hello, noob with one season of beekeeping here.
Well, my first two hives didn’t make it. I’m pretty bummed about it.
Originally I thought it was the yellow jackets overpowering them but now I’m unsure. There were lots of dead bees in the hive and sugar water but there was plenty of food. The yellow jackets were coming and going freely at the end.
Maybe they were too cold, maybe it was pesticides, maybe I didn’t treat them for mites?
I tested for mites twice and barely found any in my sugar wash so I didn’t treat but this time I figure I will treat them no matter what.
So my questions:
Any thoughts on what killed them?
Should I simply swap out some frames and reduce it to one Langstroth deep? There are plenty of capped honey frames in both hives I figure I will let sit in there until May. Not sure if that’s a good idea or not.
