Drone bee research?

Drone bee research?

The accepted knowledge is that all drones do is mate. Bees seem to be the most ruthlessly efficient creature on the planet and do not waste resources at all yet hives maintain a drone population for a lot of the year and not just early in the year for the initial queen mating. This seems atypical behaviour for the efficient bee.

Is there any research that suggests that drones perform other roles? Has anyone had a hive with very low drone numbers and what effect did it seem to have?
