I'm planning on consolidating two hives this fall. Both are wild captures and one is strong (a full deep brood and a medium honey super for stores). The other had a mite issue and never really built the box out (still a single deep). I'd like to combine the weak with the stronger, but I'm concerned a triple heading into winter will be too much space.
Is there a recommended method for combining in this situation? I'm thinking I pinch the weak queen, put the weak box on top of the strong brood and under the medium super.
Should I approach this differently?
