Can’t find anything on this subject…

Hi all –

I’m located in central MA with two hives. Both were rockstars last season (2021) and they went into winter stocked with honey and bees. Treated for mites, etc.

I’ve been thinking ahead to the spring and have a question that I can’t really find a clean answer to anywhere.

My question is this: in the spring, assuming both hives survive, can I split them into a single new hive, commingling the bees? Or do I have to do two separate splits?

I have combined weak hives in the past, and my hypothesis is that this would be similar… But I just wasn’t sure if anything changed when splitting.

Thanks in advance for any guidance you can provide!
