Can combining hives cause starvation in weak environment?
I've pretty much researched how to combine hives, this question is "Should I"?
I'm in south Texas with 2 more months of 90 degree weather, but in the 3 years Ive lived here, there doesn't seem to be much forage for the bees in the fall. My weak hive is listless, all cells empty, but still a lot of bees.
The queen-right hive is 2 deep brood boxes and 2 shallows. One shallow is totally empty and the second is maybe 10% to 15% capped honey with nothing new being drawn out. This is my 3rd year in this location with two hives and I've never robbed because there's never been enough to bother.
If I try to combine the weak hive into the queen-right one, am I strengthening it, or just adding more mouths to feed on a limited reserves?
