Best temp or temp trend before doing a mid winter inspection.

Hello!

‘Ask 3 beekeepers a question and you’ll get 6 answers!’ But I wanted to get y’all’s opinion based on some first hand successful trends.

Does anyone have any first hand advice on the best temps for a mid winter inspection? Is it strictly based on the temp at the time of inspection? Do I need to consider how cold it will be in the next XX hours? Should I just leave it shut till March when there’s a nectar flow (Pacific Northwest USA)? The hive in question went into winter strong and it was a wild swarm so I have no idea what race it is to try to judge swarm tendencies other than the queen was suuuper dark – which I realize doesn’t help a ton. I certainly want to catch it before it swarms, but I don’t want to chill the brood. Any thoughts on putting a brood box full of empty drawn comb on top mid winter to try to give them some space as opposed to swarming? Would that make a feeder box on top of that too far away from the winter cluster?

Dang, lots of questions. Thanks for humoring a noob beek.
