Beginner beekeeper looking for tips on my approach

Hey, I'm going to start beekeeping in the northern virginia area in this coming season and wanted to get your idea on an approach I wanted to try:
I want to purchase some bees, like italian honey bees to guarantee I have a hive thats simple to work with in a langstroth hive which is very well documented.

In addition to that, I'd like to get a hive by catching a swarm early in the spring kept in a horizontal hive which is documented but not as much as a regular langstroth from what I've read. This hive would be more hands off with few checks done throughout the year, and with the ordered bees I'd perform more consistent checks and be a bit more hands on treating them to get more experience examining bees.

What do you guys think of this idea?
