We are grateful you are here

Bees left to fend for themselves since last winter. What can I do?

My elderly neighbor died last fall. I overwintered his bees, but then his kids sold the property and I didn't have access. I finally met the new neighbor (he has it as a summer house now). He agreed to let me maintain the bees but then I broke my foot two months ago. I might need surgery because of complications and probably won't be able to walk until September at best.

I guess more than anything I feel horribly guilty that they've been fending for themselves, and sad about no honey. There's 4 hives – two have a single brood box and two have 2 brood boxes. No supers.

I'm new to beekeeping and my neighbor was my mentor. What should I do in September when I get to them? What can I reasonably expect? Should I still feed if they haven't had any honey taken?
