Bees behaving differently last 2 weeks. Indicative of hard times approaching?

I'm a first year beekeeper with a top-bar hive. I only use a light smoke (& sometimes light gloves) for protection.

All year, until last week, my bees have been extremely docile & I didn't get stung once. When I'd brush them off of comb, they'd fall right off into the hive & not reemerge. When I removed a bar some would peek out timidly. There would be several new combs each week and the hive is nearly full now.

Last week and this week, however, I've been stung once each visit, when I brush off the bees they fly in a cloud around me and are generally upset by my presence. When I removed a bar they rush into the opening I made. They also seen to have slowed down their comb-building.

I'm thinking that this may be because of the time of year. Could they be more protective because daylight hours are shortening lately?

I've decided to leave them alone for the remainder of the year: no more honey & no more comb straightening.

Thoughts, advice & personal experiences appreciated!
