Adding heat with a low wattage bulb?
Is there a drawback to adding heat to a colony by placing a low wattage bulb below the bottom board?
To be clear, I'd enclose and insulate the bulb on 5 sides (not the top), then attach it to the bottom of the bottom board, making sure that no light is allowed to the brood box.
I'd only run the light at night or when the temps remain below 40°F, or something like that.
I have 5 colonies, and to me they are certainly worth the small cost in electricity and hardware. I have kept them in a deliberately hands off manor, but this year (California, drought) saw so little honey that I collected none, and want to ensure that they do not go hungry trying to stay warm.
