2 empty hives. Full of honey and pollen. East Bay, CA
We had 2 colonies of Saskatraz bees, supposedly the new and improved strain for combating mites and CCD.
The were doing gangbusters well over the summer. There were good numbers around the hive about 3 weeks ago but unfortunately due to life we weren't able to check in over the fall.
Went out today to prep for a check to tomorrow and, surprise, empty hives. It had to have happened recently, a minimal amount of uncapped honey in one hive, seemingly pristine in the other. A couple of recent emerging bees here and there so this just happened?
It was a cold day here, but regardless the yellowjackets were entering in force.
No bee bodies, no real sign of mites on the sticky traps but hard to tell under the decapping dust. Will look more tomorrow.
Thoughts though? It's been a rough summer, not a lot of forage. But their stores seemed good. Just no bees.
